Causation The causal impact of gut microbiota and metabolites on myopia and pathological myopia: a mediation Mendelian randomization study (Apr 2025)

That's... intriguing. While I know a lot about the potential of gut microbes to treat a vast range of diseases - I am much less informed about it's potential to treat diseases like mine - and even less so about the role of the immune system in it.

Causation The causal impact of gut microbiota and metabolites on myopia and pathological myopia: a mediation Mendelian randomization study (Apr 2025)

I have poor eyesight due to Retinopathy of Prematurity - retinal scarring limits my visual resolution since my brain has to construct image from a smaller amount of information. I just doubt gut microbiome manipulation could help me as retinal cells don't regenerate :(

Other An imbalance of gut metabolites in children with autism disrupts neurotransmitter production, influencing behavioral symptoms (Apr 2025, n=84) Relationships between brain activity, tryptophan-related gut metabolites, and autism symptomatology

Another autism study, nice! I would like to do some personality and cognitive optimization of myself and I am frustrated how slow the pace of development is. The standard of care for Neuroticism are the SSRIs which were introduced in 1987, the same year Amiga 500 was released. Can you imagine...

Causation The Causal Relationships Between Gut Microbiota, Brain Volume, and Intelligence: A Two-Step Mendelian Randomization Analysis (Sep 2024)

I wonder what microorganisms might influence visuospatial memory? I have poor visuospatial memory which makes it hard for me to memorize streets and Chinese characters. My background - a premie born 2 months too soon. I suffered 2 bouts of pneumonia in an ICU due to de facto medical negligence...

Blog The FDA and FMT regulation, part 2. (Jul 2024, HumanMicrobes.org) I met with the FDA. Here's what I shared with them, and their response.

@Michael Harrop Have you tried contacting doctors who might help you popularize FMT? They might be more open minded than politicians and they have more authority than random people like us.

State of microbiome-based therapies 5-10 years from now?

@Michael Harrop I would do FMT some 3-5 years from now but I have some doubts: While there are certain traits like emotional stability, working and visuospatial memory, which I'd like to improve, there are others that I very clearly don't want to change I don't want to lose my extreme...

State of microbiome-based therapies 5-10 years from now?

What will be the state of affairs in the field in 5-10 years? Especially in cognitive and mental health? Will FMT still be a thing or perhaps newer, better therapies will be available? I am not overall unhealthy and I would rate my personality at 6.5/10 and my cognitive health at 7/10 at age...

Blog The FDA and FMT regulation, part 2. (Jul 2024, HumanMicrobes.org) I met with the FDA. Here's what I shared with them, and their response.

@Michael Harrop Sorry to say this but you've probably already lost your battle :( Research (conducted in the US itself) says that what bottom 90% of Americans want has zero influence on actual US government policies. The top 10% is much more influential...

@Michael Harrop I can partially agree with you. While it's true that Bernie should know about the FMT, the issue with his staffers is less clear. Each day they receive dozens - if not hundreds - of e-mails from various tinfoil hatters and cranks who think they've discovered some absolute...

Blog The FDA and FMT regulation, part 2. (Jul 2024, HumanMicrobes.org) I met with the FDA. Here's what I shared with them, and their response.

@Michael Harrop Im asking again - how can Bernie Sanders even know about FMT/microbiome? There are basically three groups of people who know about it: 1. Medical researchers 2. Science enthusiasts 3. Patients. Since he doesn't belong to any of the above, how could he know? And if he doesn't...

Blog The FDA and FMT regulation, part 2. (Jul 2024, HumanMicrobes.org) I met with the FDA. Here's what I shared with them, and their response.

@Michael Harrop But is Bernie Sanders really a narcissist/psychopath or just ill informed? The FMT and all other microbiome stuff is still a new thing, known only to a handful of scientists/researchers... If you went back in time to say 1865 and asked 100 physicians about the germ theory, the...

Blog The evidence and rationale supporting our stool donor criteria (2022, HumanMicrobes.org)

@Michael Harrop Have you searched for donors among the military? Soldiers need to be in pretty good shape and special forces operatives are selected for good health. As a slightly off topic note, I think one of the main issues with FMT is going to be money. FMT cannot be patented so there is...

    Gut microbiome and personality

@Michael Harrop I have high Neuroticism. Do you think I could significantly lower the level of this trait if I get a successful FMT of someone who is low on Neuroticism? Research shows there is a clear correlation between gut microbiome and Big Five personality traits. For example this 2024...

    Gut microbiome and intelligence

While searching the internet I came across one study. https://gutpathogens.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13099-022-00487-z The study claims a link between gut bacteria and cognitive performance. Now, does it mean that by changing our gut microbiome we could potentially raise our IQ?

Paul Froomes, AU My 21 year old autistic son’s response to fmt at Dr Froomes office in Melbourne (2019)

For one thing, corelation does not always equal causation. It might be possible that autism causes those changes in gut microbiome and not the other way around. Autistics for example are picky eaters which does impact the microbiome. Are you sure that the relationship between gut microbiome and...
