WHO to scrap weak PFAS drinking water guidelines after alleged corruption. Regulations ignored credible research and didn’t fully protect human health, independent scientists say https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/article/2024/aug/13/world-health-organization-pfas-drinking-water-health-guidelines
The guidelines would have allowed far more PFAS in drinking water than what is allowed by the US Environmental Protection Agency.
The EPA found virtually no level of exposure to PFOA and PFOS in drinking water is safe, and this year set its legal limits for the compounds at four parts per trillion (ppt), which is the level at which testing technology can reliably measure and remove PFAS from water.
Birnbaum told the newspaper that invoking uncertainty and casting doubt on the science is an industry tactic. That's one of the approaches being used in legal challenges to the EPA's stricter rules.
